Many Diesel vehicles in on- and off-highway are equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction system that reduces NOx. This system requires that a reagent is injected and due to that it is sensitive for sabotage (reagent tank is not refilled, incorrect reagent is used, system is dismantled, etc.). Legislators around the globe have identified this risk and provided guidance’s on how they require that these systems are made sabotage proof. A common-denominator in their approaches is a warning and punishment (inducement) system for the vehicle operator.

BRACE Automotive was asked by a customer to create a common design, captured in requirements, for the warning and inducement system. As the customer will provide the software made from these requirements to their customers in a large variety of markets the design made by BRACE Automotive had to cover legislations in all markets and for the range of Diesel vehicles from passenger cars to off-highway machines. A common design had to be made that could be calibrated/configured per market.

BRACE Automotive investigated legislation, legislator guidance’s and legislation discussion documents from countries in the continents Europe, South-America, North-America, Australia and Asia. In addition BRACE Automotive investigated operator manuals of vehicles already equipped with SCR Inducement systems. Based on the gathered information a search for the common-denominators was started and with that outcome a design was made for a global inducement system. The design was captured in requirements for the software developers of the customer.
